The Way Forward

Posted on Tuesday 6 March 2007

It always amazes me how many pieces of cool technology are out there, yet how few are available to consumers now. You can get helio display screens that project images in thin air, you can sellotape a mobile phone, an iPod and a 10MP camera together and it will be smaller than many smart phones, yet you can’t buy a phone that does all these functions to the same level in one package.

I recently watched a video with Larry Page, co-founder of Google, and he expressed his views on what is wrong with the consumer technology industry today. He explained how companies need to work together to develop standards for many products so that they can start interacting and communicating with each other, and how everything should travel down one cable. How annoying is it that you have to plug 15 cables into your computer and you need a separate one for your phone, your iPod, your monitor, your TV etc etc, why is there not one standard of cable for everything!

Anyway, over a year ago, Jeff Han made this presentation at the TED, and you can start to understand where Apple is going with the iPhone and where computers should be going. Standard cursor and icon systems are a thing of the past, bring on interactive displays which we control with our hands.
